Your parent or guardian should receive annual CTF statements which will include your Unique Reference Number, details of the account type and the name of the provider. They may also have already converted your CTF into a Junior ISA. Why not ask them about your account?
It’s possible that a CTF was set up in your name that your parent or guardian doesnt know about. This may be what’s known as a Revenue allocated account. These were set up if the voucher issued by the government was not used to open a Child Trust Fund before its expiry date and details of the account would have been issued to the individual claiming child benefit by both HMRC and the CTF Provider. In many cases, this still did not prompt the person with parental responsibility to claim the open CTF for their child and so these still need reuniting with children.
If you and your family dont have any information about your CTF, you are not alone. According to the charity The Share Foundation, approximately one million people have a CTF without knowing it. This can happen when families move house and dont update their provider or lose their provider information altogether.
The Share Foundation can help you find out what provider your CTF is with, but you must be 16 or over to track this information down. If you are under 16, you will need the parent or guardian who set up the account to do it.
To locate your CTF, you will need to complete these three simple steps:
- Go to the Share Foundation website and complete this form.
- Fill in the details of the child who holds the CTF and click Register.
- Once you have submitted the form, print it, sign it and send it to the address provided. The search can only be made when the signed paper form has been received.
When Share Foundation receive your signed form through the post, they will forward it to a special department at HM Revenue & Customs. When they find which account provider your account is with, theyll write to you directly, and let Share Foundation know.
You can then contact your CTF provider directly to get up-to-date information and access to your CTF.
